Faba bean (Vicia faba) is a cornerstone grain legume for global food and feed systems, valued for its high protein content, nitrogen fixation capacity, and adaptability to diverse environments. The Faba Bean Pangenome Consortium (PanFaba) was established for building a comprehensive, high-resolution view of genomic diversity across cultivated germplasm.
Consortium Goals
1️⃣ Build a High-Quality Pangenome Resource
Generate chromosome-scale genome assemblies across diverse faba bean accessions, including plant genetic resources and elite cultivars.
2️⃣ Decode Functional Variation
Identify structural variants, gene presence/absence variation, and short nucleotide variants that influence gene expression and phenotype.
3️⃣ Enable Trait Discovery
Integrate genomic, transcriptomic, and phenotypic data to map genes and regulatory regions associated with key agronomic traits.
4️⃣ Accelerate Breeding
Translate genomic discoveries into molecular markers and predictive tools to support breeding programs worldwide.
